| Georgia SBDC Network Celebrates 30 Years of Service to Business Owners |
|
KENNESAW, GA: In 1977, when President Jimmy Carter was inaugurated, Americans drove their Ford Pintos to local gas stations where they filled up on gas which cost only .65 cents a gallon. They stood in long lines to view the very first Rocky and Star Wars movies while listening on 8-track tapes to The Eagles sing their hit, Hotel California. The World Trade Center was just completed, Apple put their first desktop computer into the market and the idea for the Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network was born.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) saw the need to address the high failure rate of new businesses and created the SBDC center concept to provide education and consulting to business owners in Georgia. The small pilot program was housed “almost in a hallway” at the UGA Terry College of Business and was so successful that the concept has since blossomed to over 1,000 Centers in all 50 states. Over the past 30 years, SBDC’s have assisted over 1.3 million business owners. Extensive research has shown the effectiveness as businesses assisted by the SBDC Networks experienced nearly nine times the job growth of the average business. Serving as a resource to women, minorities and veterans who own businesses, the SBDC operates as a cost-effective resource that is easily accessible on university campuses across the nation. To celebrate the 30 years of service to Georgia’s business community, the Kennesaw SBDC will host an Anniversary Lunch to celebrate 30 years of service to Georgia’s business community on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. held at the Jolley Lodge on the campus of Kennesaw State University. This luncheon is provided to lenders who operate in partnership to many SBDC clients and is sponsored by Security Bank, Abraxas Business Services and Community West Bank.
