Habersham will receive the Minority Small Business Champion Award from Terri Denison, SBA Georgia District Director, at an Atlanta luncheon on May 22 that is hosted by the Georgia Lenders Quality Circle. He was nominated for the statewide award by the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Macon. The award to Habersham recognizes his efforts, beyond his own business responsibilities, to advance minority small business interests within the community. A Macon native, Habersham’s business is a multi-faceted sales and marketing company that produces the Macon Middle Georgia Black pages & Resource Guide. This is an annual publication that promotes and showcases African American businesses in the middle Georgia area. The company also designs and develops websites as well as other marketing materials to assist small businesses. In addition to his other business interests, Habersham spent 25 years as an employee of the Macon-Bibb County Board of Tax Assessors. He was board chairman for six of those years. For the past 20 years, he has also facilitated life skills training courses for soon-to-be releases male inmates at the Macon Transition Center and for boys who are involved in the Juvenile Justice system. In an effort to get the community more involved with current events, Habersham hosts a weekly radio talk show known as “A Call to Action.” Sponsored by his Black Pages publication and Murray Communications, the program airs every Sunday morning on two stations, MAJIC 100.1 FM and Power 107 FM. Habersham has been active in supporting youth in public housing. He founded Adopt-A-Role Model in 1990 that is a mentoring program designed to address the social, economic and educational challenges of African American boys raised in single-parent, female-headed households. To date over 1,000 boys have been mentored by successful adult males in Macon. Habersham shined shoes as his first job at age 14. He attended public schools in BibbCounty and is a 1961 graduate of Ballard Hudson High School. In 1965, he earned his BA Degree in English from Savannah State College and pursued graduate studies at Mercer University. After college, Habersham taught high school English in the Chatham County public school system. Later, while teaching at Lanier High School, Habersham was chosen as one of the first black football coaches at a historically white male high school. For six years, Habersham served on the board of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce and is currently a life member. He attends Macedonia Baptist Church and is a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. His wife, Myrtle Habersham, is a senior executive with the Social Security Administration. They have one son, Tobias, who lives in Greenville, South Carolina.
